Carmen Allen is a Library Assistant at Newcastle Campus, and in her own time she is also a very active fundraiser for the International Justice Mission (IJM). So far Carmen has organised 6 events and raised in excess of $18000 for IJM.
Carmen shares why IJM inspired her to start fundraising: “I’ve been a passionate supporter of IJM ever since I heard of their amazing success to rescue victims of bonded slavery and sex trafficking. Their work involves the employment of personnel from the countries they work in, to investigate, prosecute and facilitate aftercare support. They work collaboratively with the local police, and justice systems on a case by case basis to see that perpetrators are convicted and sentenced. This approach has been highly successful and I encourage you to read about one of their projects called Project Lantern.”
Let’s Scrap Against Slavery is an annual retreat for ladies who love scrapbooking and cardmaking, which has raised over $10000.
Girls 4 Girls ‘Cards & Cupcakes’ and ‘High Tea Party’ events for school aged girls and their mums, aunts, grandmas, all about Aussie girls helping those girls who are less fortunate overseas. A ‘G4G’ Leadership Team of 7 young girls aged between 10 and 14 has formed out of this and the girls learn about social justice, are involved in the running of the events, the preparation beforehand, and as ambassadors for Girls 4 Girls.
Carmen is planning a website under the umbrella brand called ‘Scrap Slavery’ where you will be able to see what is happening, purchase tickets for events, and be linked into the work of International Justice Mission Australia.
