Early photograph of construction on the Belmont campus, most likely taken on the day of the Setting of the Foundation Stone Ceremony, 25th February 1966. Guests and speakers included the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education C.B Cutler, Director of Technical Education R.Dunbar, President of Lake Macquarie Council T.Pendlebury, Chairman of the Newcastle Technical Education District Council C.J.Chandler, and the Principal of Newcastle Technical College M.Watson. Belmont campus just celebrated its 50 year anniversary on the 10th Feb 2017.

Chandler Building Christmas card

Season’s Greetings 1971 Christmas card of the C.J. Chandler Building or F block as it is now known at Newcastle Campus. Each card was printed inside with news of the new General Nurse Education course to be run the following year from this building. The building was named in honour of Clifton James Chandler, citizen of Newcastle and dedicated to the service of Technical Education. Christmas Greetings and best wishes for the New Year 1971 and also from the Library staff – 2016.

Painters working on Clegg Building, Newcastle Technical College, 1939

Thankyou to Hunter TAFE staff and community members who have donated items and information to our Hunter TAFE Historical Collection. It helps complete the jigsaw puzzle of our history in Technical Education and the role it has played in the Hunter community for the past 120 years.

This photograph found its way into our collection with some writing on the back indicating it was a group of painters working on the Clegg building (D Block), circa 1939. If you have any information regarding this photograph, possibly recognizing someone from the picture or knowing of someone who worked on the early buildings we would love to hear about it.
