Market Research Using The ABS Census Data

Australian Bureau of Statistics Census Data

Australian Bureau of Statistics Census Data

Many students are required in their course to analyse the demographics of an area in Australia.  They might be trying to do some market research and find out if an area is suited to a small business they are planning to create.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts a national Census of Population and Housing every five years.  The last Census conducted was on the 9th August 2016.  There have been two releases of data from the 2016 Census and another is due in October 2017.

You can find out lots of interesting information about a suburb, postcode, local government area, or larger regional areas in Australia.  Information about the people living in the area such as age, income, educational level, ancestry and religion.  You can find out the number of people with mortgages or renting, the types of dwellings in an area, and number of motor vehicles per dwelling etc.

All of this information helps our governments plan services such as aged care and child care facilities, schools, and infrastructure such as transportation and hospitals.  Anyone in the community can freely access the Census information.  Check out our Statistics LibGuide to access Census information and our help sheet that will show you how to search the data easily.  You can also call into your local TAFE Library where a friendly librarian can show you how to access the Census.

Share The Dignity at the Library, Hamilton Campus

We are happy to announce that we have a collection box in the Library, Hamilton Campus to support Share The DignityShare The Dignity aims to support homeless women and women in domestic violence shelters who are unable to afford sanitary items.  If you would like to supply any sanitary items please drop them into the collection box in the Library (near the newspapers) or to the Library Staff.  We are hoping to move the collection box around to different sections on campus so that the campaign is visible to all.

Thanks to Toni Foot for raising this community issue and obtaining the collection box from Share The Dignity.

Thank You For Helping The Homeless

Hamilton Library staff have just concluded an appeal for donations to help local people suffering homelessness.  Our blanket display has been a great talking point among staff and students. We have been overwhelmed with the generosity of our TAFE community and have been able to compile care packages for homeless men and women.

The donations we received during the Helping the Homeless appeal.

Helping the homeless appeal

Care packages compiled from the donations.

Our staff and students have openly talked about homelessness, personal things that they do to help people in the community, and also how they are educating their own children about community issues.

Thank you to everyone who has donated and been involved in our appeal.

For a local focus on homelessness, check out this special article from the Newcastle Herald: “The Man On The Street“.
