White Ribbon Day 2016

White Ribbon Day on 25 November is a national day for the prevention of violence against women. One in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse perpetrated by someone known to them, and on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of domestic violence. This year, White Ribbon Australia is asking men to stand up, speak out and act for the women in their lives, as violence against women is a men’s issue too.

Two very successful White Ribbon events were held at Hunter TAFE libraries this week, at Hamilton and Newcastle campuses:

About 50 participants attended the White Ribbon Day morning tea at Hamilton Campus Library on Monday 21st November. The event included guest speaker from VOCAL (Victims of Crime Assistance League), resources available from the library, a Pledge Board for people to sign and White Ribbons available to purchase by gold coin donation. Library Technician Debbie Harbrow organised this event with Youth Work students & teacher Anthony France, with the Hamilton Campus Hospitality section providing catering for the morning tea.

More than 150 students from Foundation Studies English Courses attended the White Ribbon Morning Tea at Newcastle Campus Library on Wednesday 23rd November. Colleen Webb, Relieving Manager Learner Services at Hunter TAFE, and Police Chief Inspector Trevor Shiels  were guest speakers at the event, with an attending police team answering questions and  meeting the students afterwards. Library displays are currently highlighting resources for interested students. White ribbon sales continue until Friday and proceeds will be donated to the White Ribbon Foundation. Library Assistant Carmen Allen provided the catering and input into organising this event.
