Hunter TAFE Historical Collection : Mobile Instructional Unit

Mobile Instructional Unit

This photo of a teacher and student inside a Mobile Instructional Unit at Singleton in the 1950s, is an important example of technical classes being made available to those in rural areas away from city centres. The Mobile Instructional Units consisted of 3 train carriages, 1 being set up as a lecture and demonstration room, and the other 2 equipped with lathes, farm machinery, electric and oxy-acetylene welding apparatus, engine and fitting and machining tools, and other modern equipment that was made available for tradesmen to build up their skills and also complete their studies via the Correspondence Teaching Division, Sydney Technical College. Circuit 2 from Sydney would visit Singleton and Muswellbrook, docking at the train station of the towns for a week at a time.
